The 21st February

Ekushe February is the shaheed day.It is a red letter day in the history of Bangladesh. It is a turning they were dominated by the people of the then west Pakistan. This idea gained momentum when the government declared that urdu should be the then only state language of the country. The students of Dhaka university protested against this .Their argument was that Bengali should be one of the majority people while Urdu was spoken by the minority people. So Bengali was the mother tongue of the majority people while Urdu was spoken by the minority people. So, Bengali should be one of the state languages. But the rulers of Pakistan did not listen to reason. So, the students started movement for establishing the right of their mother tongue. Defying the orders of the authority the students brought out procession on 21 February, 1952. The police fired on them.Barketm, Salam, Rafiq, Jabbe and some others were killed .After this brutal killing the language movement spread all over the country .The significance of the language movement was far reaching. The spirit of Bengali nationalism rejuvenated as a result of this movement. Consequently, it led to the war of independence. Ultimately through the bloody war of independence in 1971, Bangladesh emerged as an independent sovereign state. The language movement unified the people of Bangladesh and this unity is the basis of our nation. That is why we observe Ekushe  February as the Shaheed day every year and pay our homage to the language martyrs.
